How to Help Your Child Rock School Picture Day
School picture day doesn’t have to be stressful—for you or your child. With just a little preparation, you can help them feel confident, comfortable, and camera-ready. Whether it’s your preschooler’s first time or your high schooler’s final year, these tips will help make the day go smoothly—and maybe even fun.
At Four States Imaging, we’ve photographed thousands of students across Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Here’s what we’ve learned really helps kids show up looking and feeling their best.
Choose Outfits That Are Simple and True to Them
The best photo-day outfits are comfortable, clean, and show off your child’s personality. Solid colors and classic styles tend to photograph best, but it’s okay to let their style shine too.
Try to avoid:
Distracting patterns (like tiny stripes or logos)
Shirts with writing or characters
Neon colors that can reflect onto their skin
Pick something they feel good in—it shows in the photo.
Keep Hair Neat, but Not Overdone
A fresh haircut is great—but don’t schedule it the night before. Aim for a few days in advance so it settles naturally.
For younger kids, keep hairstyles simple and out of their face. Avoid last-minute styling stress that could cause frustration in the morning.
For longer hair, brushing it down and out of the eyes makes a big difference in how open and cheerful the photo looks.
Encourage a Natural Smile (No “Say Cheese!” Required)
You don’t need to coach a perfect grin. In fact, most photographers—especially our team—are pros at getting genuine smiles. Let your child know they can relax and be themselves. Some kids worry about how to pose, so reassure them: all they have to do is listen to the photographer and smile naturally.
A little boost of confidence in the morning goes a long way.
Rest and Routine Make a Difference
The morning of picture day isn’t the time to change your child’s routine. Stick to your normal schedule, and try to get a good night’s sleep the evening before. Well-rested kids tend to be more cooperative and feel better about taking pictures.
Remind Them Why It Matters
Some kids dread picture day because they feel awkward or unsure. Help them see it as something fun—photos they’ll look back on, share with grandparents, and maybe even laugh about years from now. Framing it as a positive experience can make all the difference.
Picture Day Can Be Fun
At Four States Imaging, we know how to make picture day a smooth, positive experience for both schools and families. With a little prep at home, your child will walk into their session feeling confident—and walk out with a photo that everyone will love.
